Educational Value of Having Turbines On =
Campus
The educational and symbolic value of the wind turbine=
s will
be substantially diminished if they are moved off campus. If the turb=
ines
are a mile away they will contribute little to the identity and culture of
Gustavus. If there are walking and biking paths near the turbines and=
if
signs are erected on campus explaining our commitment to protecting Creation
and fostering a healthy environment then the turbines stand as silent, but
giant statuesque symbols embodying one of our core values. If the
turbines are visible only in the distance, the symbolic value is lost and o=
ur
commitment has no presence on campus. We would like every student or
person that sets foot on campus to feel and see our commitment to Creation =
and
that will only happen if the turbines are located on campus. Prospect=
ive
students, their families, and other groups that come to tour the turbines w=
ill
also make the direct connection between Gustavus and the turbines if they a=
re
on our campus. And of course, practically, it would be much easier (a=
nd
environmentally symbolic) to walk students and groups out to the turbines
rather than drive.
